Wombo
Larimer Lounge Presents Wombo on Tuesday, October 7– Wombo’s third album, Danger in Fives, isn’t a reintroduction; it’s a reminder. Throughout Danger in Fives, Wombo — the Louisville-bred three-piece of Sydney Chadwick (bass/vocals), Cameron Lowe (guitar), and Joel Taylor (drums) — not only enhance their formula, but routinely perfect it. The 11 tracks on Danger in Fives fine tune Wombo’s enchanting alchemy while firmly pushing the band into new territory. Maintaining the confidence of Wombo’s last full-length, 2022’s Fairy Rust, Danger in Fives reconnects with the intuition that led their wild experiments on the 2020 debut LP Blossomlooksdownuponus. Wombo’s gauzy take on post-punk — characterized by a looming darkness which Chadwick jokes is “inevitable” in their music — floats between unexpected riffs and lived-in melodies. To perfect the formula, Wombo first had to tear it apart. Standard practices of writing and workshopping material in their post-war basement rehearsal space were paused, as the band explored alternative writing processes. Even demos that took shape quickly — Danger in Fives standouts “S.T. Tilted” and “Cloud 36,” plus its opening title track — were carefully analyzed and adjusted. “We really quickly threw a lot of paint down and it was almost the picture, but we still tweaked it for a year,” Lowe says. The time spent refining ideas allowed Wombo to process and workshop as they lived and toured. Danger in Fives marks the first time the band experimented with writing while on the road, with album standout “A Dog Says” assuming its final form in a hotel room. The band’s desire to change their model was in part to “get away from a results mindset, where it’s about producing things for a certain expectation instead of doing it all for the joy of exploring,” Lowe says. This commitment toward artistic exploration led Lowe to capture as many ideas as possible, resulting in over 30 demos he then brought to Chadwick to help pare down. “There were a lot of ones where I was like, ‘This sounds really cool but it doesn’t sound like a Wombo song,’” Chadwick recalls. From those ideas, the two fleshed out basic sketches before bringing demos to Taylor in the basement. Album centerpiece “Neon Bog” emerges from this batch, a free-flowing mosaic of fortunate mistakes driven by the band’s intuition and anchored by the recurring strike of a cowbell. Soaring, distorted vocals — a result of recording Chadwick’s take to a guitar amp simulator in error — are collaged with haunting echoes, embracing a studio mistake to end with something uniquely Wombo. The experimentation across Danger in Five’s writing process comes paired with subtle shifts in Wombo’s palette: the welcome addition of digital texture, and drum machine incorporated on a handful of tracks. “I definitely had to come to terms with it, but it’s for the sake of the song,” Taylor says of the digital additions, continuing, “It’s hard to get noises like that in the studio.” Taylor wasn’t alone in departing instrumentally to achieve Wombo’s collective vision for Danger in Fives. Nourished By Time – The Passionate Ones Tour
Larimer Lounge Presents Nourished By Time – The Passionate Ones Tour on Sunday, September 28 — Nourished by Time is the musical project of Marcus Brown, a Baltimore-based artist who crafts a distinctive blend of New Wave, R&B, and Dance music. Initially created in Los Angeles’ Koreatown in late 2019, the project emerged as Brown’s escape from the monotony of his day jobs, channeling his experiences into songwriting, developing the dreamlike, uncanny sound that would define Nourished by Time. Marcus’ first project – Erotic Probiotic — came in the form of a two-song EP via London indie label Scenic Route which was quickly followed up by the critically acclaimed breakout debut album Erotic Probiotic 2. Picking up Pitchfork’s ‘Best New Music’ upon release, it went on to feature on ‘Best Of 2024’ lists on Gorilla vs Bear (#1), Pitchfork (#5), The Guardian, The Fader, Paste and more. In the same year, Brown collaborated with Yaeji on “Happy” off her debut album With A Hammer and remixed Dry Cleaning’s “Gary Ashby,” while also supporting them on a 20-stop North American tour. 2024 would go on to be a transformative year for Nourished By Time. Signing to XL Recordings, he released Catching Chickens – a five-track EP inspired by the iconic scene in Rocky where his trainer makes him chase and catch a flock of chickens as a test of agility. The record saw him land the cover of CRACK Magazine – who declared “Hell Of A Ride” their track of 2024 – and feature in ‘Best of 2024’ lists with the likes of NPR, Pitchfork, The FACE Magazine, Resident Advisor, CLASH, Mixmag, Gorilla vs Bear, and UPROXX. “Hell of a Ride” also featured in Spotify’s Best Songs of 2024, and Brown delivered a memorable performance of the track on Stephen Colbert’s YouTube live sessions series. Yuno w/ Windser
Indie 102.3 presents Yuno with Windser on Wednesday, August 20th. YUNO: Yuno’s full-length debut, Blest, out May 16 on Sub Pop, finds the enigmatic indie-pop visionary transforming the emo-tinged suburban malaise of his 2018 Moodie EP into more expansive, widescreen pop drama — suited for big moves and bigger stages. The kaleidoscopic sound he devised as a millennial hermit in his childhood bedroom in Florida has since broadened his horizons, taking him on tour with Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Superorganism, and soundtracking various series for Netflix and HBO. Imbued with elements of dream-pop, rock, trap, and psychedelia, his eclectic songs serve as bids for love and connection, which especially in the fractured era of social media, have resonated with many listeners who find solace in his vulnerability. WINDSER: When Jordan Topf was just seven years old, his father abandoned him in a hotel room in Costa Rica. With the bleary shock of a polaroid flashbulb, Topf pulls the memory into clarity: his dad joining a woman he’d just met on a motorcycle ride, and leaving him behind, alone, for 24 hours. “I remember the sound of the engine roaring and dust flying, sitting at the hotel pool, half submerged as my heart sank,” Topf says. “I crawled into a creaky bed in the darkness, alone, more alone than I’d ever felt. Thousands of miles away from home, in a country where I didn’t speak the language.” That trauma lived in the back of Topf’s mind for years until he found a path forward: writing a song about it called “Abandon”, the lead single from his self-titled debut as Windser. “I had to set myself free from the pain,” he says. “I allowed myself to feel openly and truthfully, to write something that could help me understand my father and how I’d suppressed these feelings for so long.” Both in his life leading up to this debut and through the album itself, Topf has learned how to grow into himself—how to face the pain and embrace the beauty. Across Windser, he shares his journey of coming to an understanding of his relationship with his father, of the pain in his past, of becoming more aware of his own emotions. But thankfully it didn’t end there. “I had reached a ceiling and I was cracked wide open, but I also reached the point of finding everlasting love as a means of safety, security, and changing the course of my family history,” he says. The dreamy ballad “Shut Up and Kiss Me” honors that love in an airy falsetto and blocky piano that recalls the Plastic Ono Band. Topf wrote the song for his wife, the pair having freshly married after a decade together. And after the exploration of pain in his past, the track highlights the timeless emotion that only Windser can reach: the freeing power of love, and how the world comes together when it’s right.
