CANCELLED: Raveena – Asha’s Awakening Tour w/ Fana Hues

(CANCELLED) Larimer Lounge Presents Raveena – Asha’s Awakening Tour with Fana Hues on Wednesday, May 4th –For Raveena, music is meant to be a “complete expression of the self.” It’s a truth she’s leaned on through a whirlwind couple of years, which saw a potent flurry of output and a pointed ascent into the conversation with her critically-acclaimed 2019 debut full-length, Lucid, and 2020 follow-up, Moonstone EP. Inspired by artists like Sade, Corinne Bailey Rae, Minnie Riperton, and Indian singer Asha Puthli, Raveena is a highly creative, dynamic, and spiritual artist who aims to build fully-realized worlds within each of her projects: conceptual experimentations in sound, threaded together by stories of healing and self-realization meant to experience from start to finish. Her latest offering, Asha’s Awakening, takes listeners on an epic deep dive into Indian culture—an endeavor that has been in the works for three years. An homage to her heritage as a first-generation descendant of genocide survivors and Reiki healers, the album incorporates influences from Bollywood and celebrated Indian artists like R.D. Burman and Asha Bhosle, as well as Western music—specifically R&B, rock and soul— and melds the genres prevalent throughout Raveena’s catalog into one cohesive body of work. The album also marries eras in time, fusing together a contemporary take on sounds influenced by Alice Coltrane and Asha Puthli from the 60s and 70s with those of Timbaland, Missy Elliott, M.I.A. and Jai Paul from the early 2000s. It is a labor of love that represents her evolution as an artist. Raveena remarks, “I think it’s really fun putting people in uncomfortable positions to receive new sides of you. The human experience is so vast.” Asha’s Awakening Tour VIP Package One (1) general admission ticket Early entry into the venue One (1) limited edition 20-page Asha’s Awakening comic book, curated by Raveena One (1) exclusive Raveena vinyl sticker set One (1) commemorative tour laminate, autographed by Raveena

Penelope Scott w/ Eliza Mclamb

Larimer Lounge Presents Penelope Scott w/ Eliza Mclamb on Tuesday, March 22nd –16+ under 16 admitted with ticketed guardianListening to Penelope Scott’s music is like sitting aboard a deranged theme park ride, twisting and turning through caves of Gen Z malaise and satire. This college-student-turned-TikTok-sensation writes songs that contain the absurd humor of meme culture, an acute awareness that virtually every institution is broken, and the frankness of someone earnestly trying to wrestle with their demons. They’re cathartic, thought-provoking, and laugh-out-loud funny, and the artist behind them is far more interested in capturing specific feelings than abiding by the confines of genre.Scott began taking piano lessons when she was eight years old, which she stuck with for about a decade, but her desire for creative freedom soon took hold. “I started to go off script, and I wouldn’t learn the material I was supposed to learn,” Scott says. “I would mess around and play other songs that I’d heard on the radio. It got to a point where my teacher was like, ‘That’s cool, but if you’re going to do that, then you don’t really need to be taking classical piano lessons.’” Scott later took an interest in audio software at her prep school, and she started releasing self-produced music on Bandcamp. In college, she began uploading clips of her songs on TikTok, and soon built a fanbase after the viral success of tracks like “Sweet Hibiscus Tea,” “Cigarette Ahegao,” and “Rat,” which each boast tens of millions of Spotify streams. In 2020, Scott shared a compilation of early material titled The Junkyard 2, which was filled with piano and acoustic songs that fuse the charm and melodies of pop-punk with the off-kilter expressiveness and long-winded wit of Fiona Apple. Later that year, Scott released Public Void, a hyperpop odyssey with video game-like synths—a drastic departure from The Junkyard 2.Here, Scott’s production know-how and interest in disparate sounds are on full display, and her tongue-in-cheek lyrics are even more pointed.Whether she’s channeling emo, pop or techno, Scott really just makes music the way she wants to hear it—whether that’s making percussion sound bolder, speeding up the tempo or maximizing the best part of the song. And as for songwriting, her dark humor and sharp social critiques are just as much a passionate display of her feelings as her pleas to be loved and understood. Her quips may be ~extremely online~, but the way she condenses complex emotions into playful, meaningful dialogues is universal. All patrons must show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 or proof of negative test results within 72 hours of show date. Regardless of vaccination status, all patrons are strongly encouraged to wear masks at all times.

Within a year he’d started writing his own songs, mining inspiration from folk artists like John Prine and Gregory Alan Isakov. Indie 102.3 and UMS Presents Y La Bamba w/ Ramakhandra

Indie 102.3 and UMS Presents Y La Bamba and Ramakhandra on Thursday March 17th — Y La Bamba has been many things, but at the heart of it is singer-songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza’s inquisitive sense of self. Their fifth record, Mujeres, carries on the Portland-based band’s affinity for spiritual contemplation, but goes a step further in telling a story with a full emotional spectrum. Coming off Ojos Del Sol, one of NPR’s Top 50 Albums of 2016, Mujeres exhibits the scope of Mendoza’s artistic voice like never before. “Soy como soy,” Mendoza says, and that declaration is the bold— even political— statement that positions Mujeres to be Y La Bamba’s most unbridled offering yet. The record exists in the post-2016 landscape of a national identity crisis, and Mendoza explores what it means to be a Mexican American woman by leading us through places we are afraid to go. Mujeres ventures in to the discomfort of the stories we tell ourselves. Those of our past, our futures. We all have these stories somewhere inside of us, but with Y La Bamba, Mendoza forges new narratives from old stories of heritage and family, tracing history while forging modern chicana feminism. “Music is an extension of everything I have inside. It’s how I emote,” Mendoza says. The raw honesty of Mujeres is in fact the raw honesty of Mendoza. Armed with the emotionality of traditional música mexicana and the storytelling of American folk, Y La Bamba’s artistry is not just their musical ability but Mendoza’s search for unadulterated truth. It is in an ancestral, spiritual journey in which Mendoza comes to terms with the influence and limitations of her upbringing. Mendoza’s experience of childhood summers in the San Joaquin Valley listening to mariachi, of being raised strict Catholic by immigrant parents, of being a woman having to prove herself to the boys, paints strokes of both melancholy and healing on the tracks. “From the way that my family struggles, to the way they shoot the shit… it’s so different from whiteness,” Mendoza says. “It’s a different dimension.” Y La Bamba exists in the dimension of the Mexican American imagination: somewhere cynical and optimistic at the same time. While there is a celebration of the Mexican creativity that has informed Mendoza’s life, there is a darker side to reconcile with. Where do mujeres fit in to the American story? What are the sins for which we are all guilty? How do different generations interact with the world? How can a culture become visible without tokenization? It is no surprise that in Mujeres, Y La Bamba’s first record with Mendoza at the helm of production, Mendoza contemplates these questions to tell her story. But it is not just Mendoza’s story. Challenging a narrative and dealing with the emotionality of that effort— that is everyone’s story. Mujeres was recorded by Luz Elena Mendoza and Ryan Oxford at Color Therapy Studios and Besitos Fritos Studios in Portland, Oregon. Mixed by Jeff Bond, with Grace Bugbee on bass, John Niekrasz on drums, Margaret Wher Gibson on keys, and Ed Rodriguez and Ryan Oxford on electric guitar.
The Goddamn Gallows & Scott H. Biram w/ JD Pinkus

Larimer Lounge Presents The Goddamn Gallows & Scott H. Biram with JD Pinkus on Friday, April 1st —
Liza Anne w/ Julianna Zachriou

Larimer Lounge Presents Liza Anne with Julianna Zachriou on Wednesday, March 16th –16+ show, under 16 with ticketed parent/guardianIndie rock sensation Liza Anne discovered songwriting as a young girl at summer camp, during a guitar lesson workshop. Inspired, from that moment forward she added melodies for her poetry and prose. As a teenager, she followed the thread of her love for music from quiet Saint Simons Island, GA, where she was raised, to Nashville to attend Belmont University, during which time she self-released two albums that now boast over 50 million streams. In 2018, her sound and talents came to maturity with groundbreaking Fine But Dying. Liza Anne’s songwriting reached its zenith thus far with lyrics that reckoned starkly with womanhood and mental health. It was wry, sensitive, vulnerable and resolute. For two years she toured the record, and experienced highs and lows that inspired her to slow down for the first time. She captivated and fascinated crowds while opening for Kacey Musgraves, making her television debut on Conan, playing at Paramore’s Art + Friends Festival, Shaky Knees Festival, and sold-out venues across the U.S. and Europe. She also ended an intensive relationship, spent time in therapy and meditated on who she wanted to see in the mirror moving forward. After reflecting on these events, she penned a collection of songs about the ideal self-love she wanted to achieve, messages to herself that she needed to hear, which became Bad Vacation. Produced by Micah Tawlks (Louis Prince, COIN) and Kyle Ryan (Kacey Musgraves, Natalie Prass) and co-produced by Liza Anne [with the exception to the first singles “Devotion” and “Desire” that were produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen (M83, Beck)], arrangements are poised and fierce to match, fueled by muscular guitar hooks, retro synthesizers, and insightful lyrics. It’s Liza Anne at her most confident– both polished and punk rock, evoking St. Vincent’s raw power, Kate Bush’s tender theatricality and Talking Heads’ high energy. It was released in 2020 during the pandemic, and received much critical acclaim from outlets such as NPR, Stereogum and Paper Magazine. Though live shows had to take a backseat to the lockdown and the record never made its live debut, Liza Anne made the most of the time off from touring during the past two years to write and record another album. Now, she will finally perform Bad Vacation live and preview songs from her upcoming record. On this tour, over 14 nights at select venues with a specially curated roster of guests, fans will get an opportunity to hear the album that taught Liza Anne to love herself and self-prophesied her into the woman she is today, in full, in an intimate setting that’s only fitting for such material.
